PT on his new fitness app and why physical and mental health go hand in hand

He coached Katie Price’s son Harvey during his whirlwind romance with the former glamour model in 2018. And now Kris Boyson is putting his physical skills to use again by launching a new fitness app to inspire people to stay healthy and get in shape.

The personal trainer, 32, has put together workouts, recipes and wellbeing tips for people looking to transform their lives. And Kris tells us that, like many of his clients, exercise has been the one thing he’s been able to turn to when he’s been feeling down over the past year.

“I’ve spoken about my mental health before. I have a history of struggling with it, which makes me want to help others. Having my clients come to me helps both of us – I offload stuff on to them, too. When you’re having that chat with someone along with releasing endorphins through exercise, it helps both sides massively.”

Here, we catch up with Kris to learn his top tips for taking better care of our minds and bodies this year.

Congratulations on the new fitness app, Kris. What can we expect?

There’s the fitness side to it but also a mental health element because I’m a huge advocate of taking care of your mind. It combines exercise and life coaching and mental wellbeing.

When you exercise, you release feel-good hormones called endorphins and that, along with life coaching at the same time, helps massively

Are there healthy recipes on there, too?

Yes! My favourite one is the banana pancakes. Everything on the app is simple, but this recipe is ridiculously easy – one banana, two eggs, mix it all together and it’s a pancake.

You could add some peanut butter to make it a naughty treat, or put some honey on it.

Sounds

delicious! What are the biggest misconceptions about diets?

A diet is a temporary fix. People have got to

Limber up and get in shape with Kris realise you don’t need to live on a diet. On the app there are recipes for curries, shepherd’s pie – dishes that are homely but still healthy.

What about exercise?

People think cardio is the only way to lose weight. Resistance training helps massively as you carry on burning calories through the day.

Anything else we should look out for?

Watch your portion size and sugars, they’re hidden in everything! And make sure you’re drinking enough water – it’s crucial.

Have you learnt anything new through creating the app?

I’d never done meditation before. I struggle with sleep sometimes, so there’s sleep meditation on there, which has helped me enormously. It tracks your mood too. There’s also a motivational coach on there who is amazing.

you have any tips to help people feel less anxious?

Set yourself an alarm so you’re getting up straight away and not dwelling on anything in bed. Then make yourself a to-do list of your goals, so if you tick off one thing you get a sense of achievement. Talk to people and exercise and you’ll always feel better. And reduce your alcohol intake.

Get moving! Even if it’s just walking, doing any activity will make you feel better and put you on a good path.
