Lamps takes dim view of sack chat during pandemic

- HARRY PRATT

FRANK LAMPARD insists the fear of losing his dream job at Chelsea is insignificant compared to the tragic consequences of Covid.

The UK coronavirus death toll is over 95,000 while millions are facing unemployment and economic uncertainty.

And under-fire Blues boss Lampard admits those dreadful statistics put talk he is facing the sack at Stamford

Bridge into sharp perspective.

Ahead of today’s home FA Cup tie against Luton, Lamps said: “It’s a very important point.

“I’m manager of Chelsea and a Chelsea fan. In these tough times I can come to work, put on this tracksuit and feel proud to wear it.

“A lot of people are suffering up and down the country, around the world. People have been dying, the numbers go up daily.

“When I see people are losing their jobs, people are struggling with livelihoods, then that’s a massive perspective to the so-called pressures or struggles (at Chelsea). I genuinely mean that.

“When we go through a run of games and don’t win, I look for solutions and answers and I’ll fight for them.

“And then I expect that from the players on the pitch. “That’s not the worst pressure, that’s a good pressure.

“Once everyone stops talking about the pressure I’m under, maybe I’m just fortunate to be doing a job that I love.”

The scrutiny that Lampard (above) is under will ease, for a couple of days at least, if Chelsea can see off Championship Luton in the fourth round.

And he wants to see them start to show the identity that was on display in their decent start to the campaign.

Lampard added: “It’s interesting, because when you’re playing well and winning, your identity is clear and it’s something you want to shout from the rooftops.

“And when you’re not playing well, people question your identity, especially when you’re a new manager.”
