Jota can be sign of times for Kop

- By ANDREW WILLIAMS

we had much less points after the first part of the season. The difference was we had the injuries in the first part of the season but in the second part, they all came back.

“We had a winter break and I knew after the last game of the first part of the season, that when we came back all the injured players would be back so it’s completely different situation.

“Because pretty much nobody comes back here.

“And that’s not a problem it’s just you can’t compare it. You have to find solutions.

“But it’s not that easy that I have a situation like this seven, eight years ago and I just take out the book where you wrote all the notes and have a look and say, ‘Ah, yeah that’s what we can do.’

“The only thing we can do now is to work as hard as you can, fight as much as we can to play as good as you can to win football games. Because that changes everything.”

DIOGO JOTA believes he can give Liverpool exactly what they missed in the January transfer window – a new striker signing!

After an unprecedented defensive injury crisis Reds boss Jurgen Klopp added two defenders to his squad in January, Ben Clarke from Preston and Schalke’s Ozan Kabak.

But after scoring just four goals in their last six Premier League games the faltering champions desperately need goals.

And fit again Jota hopes he can add that missing firepower.

The Portugal forward made his first appearance of 2021 when he came on as a 62nd minute substitute in Thursday’s defeat by Chelsea, having been sidelined with a knee injury since December 9.

He said: “I feel like I could be like a winter transfer.

“That’s what I hope. They can rely on me and think I can help them in the future.

“I can give a new boost in terms of confidence and freshness – because obviously they’ve been playing and fighting for the club.”

Jota scored eight goals in his last 11 Liverpool appearances before the knee injury and hopes to be involved against Fulham at Anfield today.

“Fulham is a quick turnaround from the game against Chelsea and that makes it difficult,” he said. “But it’s a game where we really need the three points.

“Doing the maths now doesn’t matter – there’s still a long journey to go and we just need to grab the points now.

“I think getting the win at Anfield again is really important. It’s been a long time and it will be really important for the team.

“Hopefully we can do that on Sunday.”
