Frank talk WARREN SAVED ME BACK IN THE DAY JUST LIKE HE HAS FOR FURY TYSON HAS EDGE ON AJ IF BATTLE OF BRITS DOES EVER GO AHEAD

- By TOM HOPKINSON

FRANK BRUNO’S resurrection in boxing had one major similarity with Tyson Fury’s — both had promoter Frank Warren behind them. And 26 years after helping him finally win his world crown, Bruno fully expects Warren to help Fury become the undisputed heavyweight champion when he meets Anthony Joshua this summer. Bruno had failed in world title fights – against Lennox Lewis in 1993, Mike Tyson in

1989 and Tim Witherspoon in

1986.

And he was down on his luck when Warren engineered a fourth and final shot. The rest, is history, with the fans’ favourite shocking American Oliver McCall to claim his WBC crown and delight the British public. Fury (above right) had become world champ beating Wladimir Klitschko when he suffered an almighty fall into depression and addiction. But after linking up with Warren he began his journey back to the top to win the WBC title Bruno once held.

Bruno, 59, said: “Frank Warren was a lifesaver. I’d split up with Terry Lawless and Mickey Duff, I had a fight in Glasgow, then my next one was against

Oliver McCall.

“That was my last stand.

I went to a training camp for four months to get my stuff together.

“But it was Frank who got me the opportunity with Don King and it was thanks to Frank it happened that way.

“I owe him as he put it on the line for me. They were good old days.

“As for Fury v Joshua, Fury is in front for me.

“He is a very dangerous guy because he doesn’t give a monkey’s who’s in front of him and is a much better fighter than people give him credit for.

“He can move, he can punch and knows how to wind up his opponents.

“Joshua is hungry as well but he still has a lot to learn.” Regarding that fight, Fury has revealed there are “three or four big offers on the table”. Fury’s father John cast doubt on whether the fight would go ahead last week. But ‘The Gypsy King’ issued a positive update on Twitter on Friday, saying: “Just had some big news. Three or four big offers on the table. Interest from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Uzbekistan, Russia, America, England. “Hopefully we get this big fight on. Let me smash this big dosser.

“Big useless dosser, should I say, because when I get him, I’m going to give it to him.”

Joshua (below) tweeted: “I want to give my fans what they want and I’ll do whatever I can to deliver. Hoping to share some positive news soon.” Bruno, meanwhile, is one of the big-name contributors to the BT Sport film ‘Make It Or Die Trying: The Frank Warren Story.’

He added: “British boxing was all about ‘Land Of Hope And Glory’ coming into the ring but Frank made it showbiz.” ‘Make It Or Die Trying: The Frank Warren Story’, the next documentary in the BT Sport Films series, will premiere on BT Sport 1 tonight at 9.30pm.
