SIR David Jason has told Bradley Walsh he will pile on the pounds playing Pop Larkin.
The 81-year-old originally played the part in The Darling Buds Of May, and said tucking into so much grub while filming the show’s trademark dinner table scenes left him bulging at the waist.
Bradley, 60, was last week spotted on set filming his role as the farmer in the reboot of the ITV show. Sir David warned The Chase host: “Pa Larkin had to really enjoy his food. It was the key to his nature.
“He had to tuck in, get that sausage properly eaten – or all four of those sausages, as it often turned out, once you had done the various angles.
“By the end of a day’s shooting I could be groaningly full of sausage – and also of fish, and of chicken, and of potatoes, and of ham sliced thick and slapped between big slices of white bread.
“I put on over a stone filming that series. It made a bigger man of me, in the most literal of senses.” Sir David also joked that he considered the troughing to be “method acting”.
He said he was inspired by Robert De Niro, who packed on more than four stone to play fighter Jake LaMotta in his later years in the classic movie Raging Bull.
Sir David added: “I’m a big fan of the approach – especially if it involves eating ham sandwiches.” Bradley is unlikely to enjoy the weight gain he faces playing Pop Larkin, with his “perfick” catchphrase. He announced last year he lost a stone and a half by taking up boxing “full-time”. Doctors had told him to slim down after a heart scare.
