VERNON: COME & GET ME STRICTLY

- ■ EXCLUSIVE by ED GLEAVE & DAVID O’DORNAN

VERNON Kay has never been offered a spot on Strictly – despite wife Tess Daly hosting it.

The presenter, 46, today reveals he would love to be a contestant... if he ever gets the chance.

He said: “I have never been asked once. They haven’t asked me. But I’m waiting. I’d love to do it. I’d love to give it a go.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to who has done Strictly loved doing it. And Tess absolutely adores doing Strictly. She lives and breathes it. It’s such a positive show.”

Vernon’s stint on I’m A Celebrity last year has given him the bug for reality telly.

He added: “The reaction I’ve had from the great British public after I’m A Celebrity has encouraged me. It has been so positive.

“I know that Strictly is a really positive show, so if a big opportunity like that came up now, I’d definitely consider it.”

But if Vernon signs up for the BBC dance contest, he thinks it might put Tess, 51, in an awkward position.

As host, it is her job to stay neutral. Vernon said: “Tess has seen me throw some shapes in the past. But it would be a bit weird if she had to say, ‘The next contestant is, erm, my hubby – the fella I live with!’

“Tess is pretty much

‘say what you see,’ and I know that if I finished a dance she wouldn’t be able to help herself.

“She’d say, ‘He did that better in the kitchen.’ She can’t hide anything. She would probably say, ‘Listen, I’m not going to go to Craig, because it was dreadful, so I’m going to save you the embarrassment of having Craig say something.

“‘Craig, I know what you’re thinking. Trust me, I’ll have a word with him when he gets home. Bruno, what do you think?.’”

Vernon also reckons at 6ft 4in he might be too tall to take part.

He said: “I would look like a giraffe on roller skates. There is no-one tall enough in the professional dancers.

“Ian Waite doesn’t do it anymore and he is probably the only dancer in Strictly history that’s tall enough to be my partner.”

Strictly will be back for a new series this autumn on BBC One.
