Murray’s mint timing leaves Schopp to Tyke flak for run

- By IAN MURTAGH

MURRAY WALLACE headed in an 88th-minute corner from namesake Jed to seal Millwall’s second win in four days and pile the pressure on Barnsley boss Markus Schopp.

The game looked destined to finish goalless when the Scot (below) rose above a static defence to find the net in emphatic style.

It stretched the Tykes’ winless run to nine games and led to an outbreak of chanting against the recently-appointed Schopp.

“It’s a tough situation and this result is the hardest to take of all of them,” he said. “This isn’t easy either for ourselves or the fans but we must stick together to get out of it.”

If there’s a crumb of consolation for the Austrian, his immediate predecessors also struggled to win before the clocks go back.

Last term Barnsley had to wait until October 29 for their first league win before spectacularly kicking into gear under Valerien Ismael.

And two years ago Schopp’s compatriot Gerhard Struber’s barren sequence stretched to 18 games from August to late November.

Devante Cole should have put Barnsley ahead in the 21st minute following a slip by Shaun Hutchinson but shot straight at Bartosz Bialkowski.

Millwall also had their moments, with Sheyi Ojo’s effort well saved by Brad Collins and George Evans not too far away from 25 yards.

But they snatched three points at the death. Boss Gary Rowett said: “That’s seven unbeaten now and I’m really pleased. “It was all about trying to find that one quality moment and thankfully we made a set-piece count.”
