TRADITIONAL Christmas Day trimmings like carrots and roast potatoes are set to be replaced by baked beans and chips.
Classic fare is in danger of dying out as young people opt for “trendy” side dishes. More than a million people admit they will be serving up their Christmas lunch with a side of beans.
It comes after a large number of those aged 18 to 34 confessed they would ditch sprouts, which are still loved by 65% of the over-75s. Findings from Tesco showed one in 50 people now has baked beans with their roast, with the highest proportion being among 18 to 24-year-olds.
But it’s not for everyone – in 2019 a Twitter user faced a backlash after posting a snap of his dinner smothered in them. The photo caused outrage among social media users. One especially angry traditionalist even branded the plate “an absolute disgrace to humanity”.
The findings also show that mash has overtaken roast spuds as the top trimming among the same generation, with chips, lentils and mac and cheese also named among the list of favourite accompaniments to a festive dinner.
Around 11% of younger generations planned to serve up macaroni cheese, compared to 2% of those aged over 45.
And according to the data from the Tesco Christmas Report, chips are becoming increasingly popular as a side dish with each generation.
While in London, around 12% said that lentils were a vital component of the Christmas meal.
A spokesman for Tesco said: “Our annual Christmas Report really lifts the lid on how people will be celebrating the festive season this year.
“It is fascinating to see how varied our Christmas meals are set to be, whether you are choosing roast potatoes or mash, macaroni cheese or cauliflower cheese.”
