ENGINEERING? IT’S CHILD’S PLAY FOR THOMAS, SEVEN

- ■ by WILLIAM LAILEY sunday@dailystar.co.uk

WANNABE engineer Thomas NourseWright could twiddle a screwdriver before he picked up a pen.

The seven-year-old has been obsessed with learning how things work since he was two.

He loves repairing fans, heaters and airconditioning units and even helps with the electrics around the house.

Mum Julia, 38, says he got started because of a fascination with clocks.

She said: “It kept him busy and just became a part of him. We encouraged him because he was so passionate. He was never without a clock – he took them everywhere.

“He took them apart and back together again.

“I think he was fascinated by them because of the mechanisms, cogs and complexity.

“His uncle bought him an adult tool kit for his third birthday, and by the age of four he was rewiring plugs. He has done a Portable Appliance Testing course, so he does all of the electrical jobs around the house and checks our items.”

Julia, of Gloucestershire, added: “Thomas also loves going out with an electrician and giving him a helping hand. “He has always been inventing ideas for the future, taking things apart and working out how he could make them better. Solar power is also one of Thomas’ big interests.”

Julia, who owns a cleaning company, says he dismantles household items so he can figure out how they work. He has even done it with a microwave. She said: “For Christmas last year he got a soldering iron. “He spends every second of his spare time tinkering away. He seems to have such a natural understanding so we just left him to it and, of course, made sure he was safe.”
