Eagle-eyed cops ‘nick’ our Eddie

-

ON the way back from playing at Snowbombing in Austria last week, we were pulled over at the German border control for a spot check.

As the cops looked at our passports they got very excited when they realised that Michael Edwards was travelling in the car with me and a couple of friends. Who’s that, I hear you ask?

Well, you may have already guessed from my picture. Although Michael is his real name, he’s better known as Eddie the Eagle – a national treasure who found fame at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and remains to this day our only Olympic ski jumper.

The police were huge fans so they looked in the car while holding his passport and said: “Michael Edwards, you are Eddie, yes?”

I replied on his behalf and said, “Absolutely, the Eagle has landed” – only to be swiftly reminded by my pal that it was the name of a German war movie starring Michael Caine.

So it was probably best that I just smiled instead of saying anything else.

This reminded me of conversations I’d had with my various radio bosses over the years, so I smiled a lot and we were on our way.

We left Eddie with the police, so everyone’s a winner, right?

I must have played at Snowbombing at least 15 times. Every year it just gets better, with thousands of British snowboarders and ski folk sliding around the mountains and living their best lives at various forest and igloo parties. My venue is called the Fun Haus, based on my original Fun House TV show but with an Austrian twist.

While there, I met a really funny chap in Mayrhofen who I’m going to hire to write new jokes for me. Klaus will be perfect for this gig as pretty much all Austrian people are funny.

After all, they live in hill areas.
