CONTE JUST SPUR-FECT SAYS SHERI

- By ALEX WOOD

ANTONIO CONTE will keep pushing Tottenham next season, says Teddy Sheringham.

The Italian was drafted in after the November sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo and slowly guided his side up the table.

Spurs eventually finished in fourth spot, the final Champions League place, just ahead of arch-rivals Arsenal.

Sheringham (below) reckons there’s more to come from the experienced chief as he eyes a full pre-season with his squad.

“I think Conte can take them an awfully long way, I think he was the perfect manager at the time,” said Sheringham, 56, who made more than 200 appearances for Tottenham during two stints with the club.

“I don’t think he would have been the perfect manager for Manchester United.

“But I think he’s the perfect manager for Tottenham.

“The discipline he instils, the work rate and the

100 per cent commitment.

“I just love everything about him and I think he’s perfect for what Tottenham needed at the time.

“I think he can go on and take them to bigger and better things.”

Conte is already strengthening his ranks and has been active in the transfer market, with Spurs having sealed deals for goalkeeper Fraser Forster from Southampton and veteran winger Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan.

A £30million deal for Brighton’s coveted Mali midfielder Yves Bissouma has also been completed.

Conte has previously won league titles with Chelsea, Juventus and Inter Milan.

And although Sheringham isn’t necessarily convinced a title push next term is on the cards, the former England striker believes his old club can still be a serious force.

“If all goes according to plan, I think Spurs should be challenging for the bracket just above the top four, but perhaps not the league title as I think Liverpool and Manchester City are much further ahead,” he added.

“Sometimes that transitional period for football teams takes a little bit longer.

“Getting better each season is what’s important for Spurs.

“That’s perfect in my eyes because City and Liverpool are a long way away from them at the moment.”
