Moore’s blast after slipshod Wednesday just scrape a point

- AT HILLSBOROUGH

DARREN MOORE lamented “avoidable errors” after a secondhalf horror show saw Sheffield Wednesday ship three goals.

The Owls were relegated from the Premier League in May 2000 and not much has gone right since.

But a new season has brought new hope at Hillsborough and a crowd of 26,901 arrived in optimistic mood.

By the end, however, Moore’s team had been reduced to 10 men following Lee Gregory’s dismissal and were left clinging on for a point.

Wednesday led 1-0 at the break through Marvin Johnson but conceded three times in 15 minutes and needed a stunning brace from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru to rescue a draw.

Owls boss Moore (right) said: “We have to cut out the mistakes.

“They were definitely avoidable and they were gifted to them by us, so we have to learn from it. It is not just one player, it is the whole team. We have got to switch on in the defensive quarter and be harder to play against.”

This is Wednesday’s 23rd successive season outside the top flight and failure to go up last term has left Moore with one clear objective. The Owls simply must win promotion and nothing less will do.

Hillsborough was buzzing after Josh Windass broke clear and crossed for left-back Johnson to rifle home a fine shot.

But Portsmouth hit back in the second half. Connor Ogilvie equalised with a header from

Marlon Pack’s cross before DeleBashiru bagged his first with a long-range stunner. Pompey levelled when Michael Jacobs bundled home after Joe Pigott’s cross was headed goalwards by Colby Bishop, who then nodded the visitors in front. Dele-Bashiru levelled the scores with nine minutes left with another fierce shot from a corner and Gregory was dismissed in added time for a second yellow card. Pompey chief Danny Cowley praised his team’s performance.

He said: “To come to a place like Sheffield Wednesday, who had the best home record in the division last year, and play like we did says a lot about the character of the group that we have.”
