1992-93

Ferdinand strikes fear

It will be remembered as the season the title dam finally broke for Alex Ferguson and Manchester United.

But it was also the year Queens Park Rangers were the kings of London.

The Rs finished fifth as 20-goal Les Ferdinand ensured QPR even finished with more wins (17) than Liverpool (16) who were a place below in the final table.

1993-94 Fjortoft’s fame

The Jan Age Fjortoft airplane celebration was a hallmark of those heady early days – even before Jurgen Klinsmann stole his thunder with the dive – but the striker couldn’t save Swindon Town from the drop.

Along with founding members Oldham Athletic, they suffered relegation and have never been back.

1994-95 Cantona’s kung-fu kick

It remains one of the defining moments in English football – Eric Cantona launching himself into the Selhurst Park crowd after being verbally abused by Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons.

1995-96 Keegan’s rant

Newcastle seemed destined to romp to the title when they held a 12-point lead over Manchester United. Bit-by-bit it was whittled away. A win over Leeds was the catalyst for Keegan’s rant, coming soon after Alex Ferguson had accused the Leeds players of playing harder against United than other sides. “I’ll tell you, honestly, I will love it if we beat them, love it.” Infamy, if not the title, for Keegan.

1996-97

Boro and the

Brazilians

The game that stands out during this campaign was the chaotic 4-3 win for Liverpool over Newcastle at Anfield, but what was happening on Teesside seemed even crazier. Despite splurging millions on Emerson, Branco, Gianluca Festa and Fabrizio Ravanelli, Boro were relegated and even failed to fulfil a game due to illness.
