Green lights for Coldplay
BAND’S NEW TOUR MAKES ECO-HISTORY
COLDPLAY got tough when it came to making their gigs as sustainable and lowcarbon as possible.
The band are playing six soldout dates at London’s Wembley Stadium and fans would never guess they are witnessing eco-history being made.
Frontman
Chris Martin explained: “In 2019, we commissioned a team of sustainability experts to study our environmental load and our carbon footprint.
“This has allowed us to identify key areas where we can avoid, reduce and mitigate our carbon dioxide emissions.
“Using our previous stadium tour A Head Full Of Dreams as a reference, we have set ourselves, with our partners and suppliers, a scientific objective of reducing our CO2 emissions by 50% using the method of ‘absolute contraction.’”
But doesn’t that come at the cost of the spectacle? Far from it, as this show is even more packed with special effects, pyrotechnics, lighting and giant screens.
Chris added: “The stage is constructed from a combination of lightweight, low-carbon materials which can then be properly reused or recycled. The show is equipped with ultra-efficient equipment, such as energy-efficient LED screens, lighting and laser system. “And we use a new generation of durable pyrotechnic products, which contain less explosive charge and are guaranteed to be free of dangerous chemicals.” At the heart of it all is a new rechargeable battery that replaces traditional gas/diesel generators. “It’s made from recyclable batteries, which supplies our show with renewable energy wherever we go,” Chris explained. “We can recharge it using recycled cooking oil from restaurants, solar energy, grid renewables and even the kinetic energy of the spectators.” Yep, Coldplay fans, now you possess the power to keep the lights on by simply dancing on their special floor covered with kinetic tiles.
