BEER sales are rocketing with Brits downing an extra 31million pints in the past three months.

Drinkers are taking advantage of cheap supermarket booze as sales in shops are up, but pubs have seen a drop in takings.

Figures from the British Beer and Pub Association show that trade in stores has shot up by 4.8% while traditional watering holes have fallen by 1.8%.

The figures claim that around two billion pints of beer were flogged in the last quarter with sales “relatively stable after a period of decline”. Euro 2016 helped to boost sales coupled with a cut in beer duty over the last three years.

BBPA chief executive Brigid Simmonds said: “These are yet more encouraging figures, and the football has given a real boost to sales.

“It is quite clear we owe a huge debt of thanks to the cuts in beer duty from 2013.

“I hope the government continues with the pioneering change in approach, and we continue to see support for fairer taxes for British beer.”

Industry experts also point to campaigns such as There’s A Beer For That, which tries to pair pints with food.

Programme director David Cunningham said: “We can see that the campaign messages of quality and our focus on encouraging people to pair different styles of beer with their meals is beginning to have a positive impact.”
