Ulysses blooms

- By CHRIS GOULDING

® ULYSSES, who was “murdered, not once but twice in the Derby,” according to his trainer Sir Michael Stoute bounced back to his best in the Bering ice Gordon Stakes in the hands of Andrea Atzeni.

“Twice he was murdered in the Derby when badly interfered with,” said Stoute. “So it turned into a non-event.”

Ulysses finished 12th of the 16 runners in the Epsom Classic.

“We fancied him to go close in the Derby,” said Stoute. “I’m pleased he has now shown us what I believed in him.”

The Gordon Stakes is seen as a stepping stone for the St Leger, but Stoute has ruled out the oldest Classic in favour of middle distance races.
