THERESA May has ordered civil servants to speed up Brexit amid fears they are trying to scupper a deal.

The Prime Minister slapped down mandarins after a former Whitehall chief said the split from Brussels is not definite.

Gus O’Donnell said Britain could keep its ties in a “more loosely aligned” EU.

And hardline Tories fear the civil servants will now drag their feet.

But Downing Street insiders last night said Mrs May had stamped out dissent. A source said: “She is very clear that Brexit means Brexit.”

Mr O’Donnell, a former Cabinet Secretary, said: “It might be that the broader, more loosely aligned ® group, is something that the UK is happy being a member of.” But Tory MP Steve Baker said: “Any official working to oppose our exit from the EU should be fired.” And fellow Tory Andrew Bridgen added: “Lord O’Donnell seems to think that despite more people voting for Brexit than anything else in the electoral history of our country, politicians should have the right to ignore it.” Meanwhile, proEU campaigners want Leave supporters to help finance their Brexit battle. Crowd-funding organiser for the People’s Challenge Grahame Pigney, 62, said: “What we’re doing is on behalf of everybody.”

A MEDITERRANEAN diet is better at combating heart disease than cholesterol-lowering drugs, a conference heard.

A study found those who had a diet rich in nuts, vegetables, fish and oils were a third less likely to die early, compared with those who ate red meat, such as beef, and butter.

The conference in Rome was told those who ate mainly along Med lines were 37% less likely to die than those who were furthest from this dietary pattern.

Previously, drugs such as statins were believed to be the most effective method of combating heart disease, the leading cause of death in the UK.

Statins are said to help reduce major heart problems by around 24%.
