I’M a bit worried about CLASS OF ’92: STILL OUT

OF THEIR LEAGUE (9pm), the BBC1 documentary series about non-League Salford City FC.

I think it’s going a bit TOWIE on us all.

I don’t mean the team’s turned orange. I’d have actually enjoyed that. No, what I mean is it’s started to feel, in parts, like a scripted reality show.

Take tonight’s bit where joint manager Bernard and fiancée Jemma head out to do a spot of wedding planning. Maybe it’s just me, but it all seems kind of staged.

We’re meant to believe Bernard is so football obsessed that he pretty much ignores both Jemma and the planning lady as they discuss menu options, physically incapable of taking his eyes off some random match that just happens to be showing on the hotel telly – the telly that they just happen (despite this lounge area being otherwise empty), to have parked themselves slap bang in front of for these nuptial negotiations.

And we’re also meant to believe that Jemma’s protest – “Come on, it’s Valentine’s Day, and this is a beautiful opportunity to talk about our wedding” – comes from the heart and not from a line the director has fed her. It’s daft, because there’s really no need.

What’s happening for real on the pitch is more than dramatic and interesting as City fight to keep their dream alive of back-toback promotions. BEFORE that, the creatures featured in BBC1’s new show

INGENIOUS ANIMALS (8pm, BBC1) include Pumpkin, a young raccoon in the Bahamas who’s so domesticated she even pees in a human loo. Just thought I’d share that with you.
