® from IAIN STEWART game and the set. But she produced an incredible effort to run away with the third 6-2 and claim an incredible triumph.

Kyle Edmund had earlier reached a Grand Slam third round for the first time after beating American wildcard Ernesto Escobedo.

The Brit recorded a shock opening win over world No. 15 Richard Gasquet on Monday. And he followed it up with an equally convincing 7-5 6-4 6-4 victory over Escobedo. It confirmed the 21-yearold’s growing reputation in what has been a breakthrough year. He led Britain to a Davis Cup quarterfinal win in Serbia in July in the absence of Andy Murray, and his performance this week will see him rise from 84th in the world rankings to inside the top 70.

Edmund hit 54 winners, 28 off his blistering forehand, and showed greater maturity than his opponent at the key moments.

Escobedo was the beneficiary of a retirement in the first round and was playing in his first Grand Slam, but the 20-year-old can point to wins against three top 100 players this year.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic was given extra time to recover from niggling wrist and arm injuries when second round opponent Jiri Vesely withdrew through injury.

That means the Serb will have had three full days of rest by the time he goes into third-round action tomorrow.
