DANNY’S SUMMER BREEZE

Drinky’s fan-tastic break

- By DAVID WOODS

DANNY DRINKWATER did not live up to his surname after being left out of England’s Euro 2016 squad.

The Leicester star refused to sulk and instead went on a summer jaunt with his mates.

His boozy antics allowed him to watch England’s exploits in France just like many other lads do in their 20s – as a fan in bars and pubs.

Drinkwater said: “It turned out this summer was the longest I have had.

Highs

“It was a bit last minute, but we had a good time. I went all over – Ibiza, Portugal, Vegas, LA, then back to Ibiza. I didn’t complain about my summer.”

Midfielder Drinkwater, 26, and winger Andros Townsend failed to make the cut for Roy Hodgson’s final squad for France.

Hodgson came under fire for failing to select the former Manchester United trainee on the back of helping the Foxes to the Premier League title.

“I was obviously disappointed,” Drinkwater said. “But football is full of highs and lows and there were enough highs last season, so I can’t complain.

“I watched England in pubs with my mates mainly. I just ® enjoyed it like a fan. For the Wales game I was coming off the golf course in Portugal and because I had had a few pints I didn’t realise the time difference.

“So after we finished on the golf course we had to go straight to the clubhouse to watch the game.

“The Iceland match was tough to watch as I’d love to have been involved just to see if I could have made a difference.”

Drinkwater is back in the England fold for Sunday’s opening World Cup qualifier in Slovakia.

And he aims to make his mark as England usher in a new era under new boss Sam Allardyce.

He said: “I would love to add to my caps, but it is not going to be easy.”

Drinkwater could link up with Foxes team-mate, striker Jamie Vardy, in Trnava.

Vardy’s rags-to-riches life story is being made into a movie and Drinkwater said he did not know yet who will play him on the big screen.

He added: “I hope he has not got me a s*** actor.

“There’s a few – Jason Statham is English. He is a good actor and his missus (Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley) is a worldie as well, so I’ll take him.”
