LEICESTER completed the biggest deal in their history last night when they signed Islam Slimani from Sporting Lisbon for £29.7m.

The Algeria striker passed a medical in Italy to secure his dream move to the Premier League.

He flew out after being given permission to leave the national team’s preparations for Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Lesotho. The initial fee is £25.5m but it will rise to £29.7m with add-ons.

It is the third time this summer the Premier League champions have broken their transfer record as boss Claudio Ranieri seeks to build on last season’s surprise title triumph.

The Foxes spent £13m bringing in defensive midfielder Nampalys Mendy from Nice on July 3, then pushed the club record higher by signing Nigerian winger Ahmed Musa from CSKA Moscow for £16.5m five days later. They had hoped to complete a double signing from Sporting by capturing central midfielder Adrien Silva to join Slimani. But that move collapsed, with the Portuguese club unwilling to sell a player they claimed had agreed to see out his career with them. Silva, who helped Portugal win Euro 2016, told reporters after Sporting’s 2-1 league win over Porto on Sunday that he was looking forward to joining Leicester. But when the deal folded, Leicester had to look to Slimani to provide their deadline day success. The striker hit 27 goals for Sporting last season as they won the Portuguese title, having shone at the 2014 World Cup. The 28-year-old has been compared to Jamie Vardy, Leicester’s top scorer last season, because he reached the top after working his way up from the lower leagues in his homeland. Slimani was playing in the Algerian fourth division when he was 21 and did not join Sporting until he was 25. ¬
