FRIENDS of the Matalan sweethearts stabbed to death wept at a makeshift shrine outside the store yesterday.

They hugged each other while reading floral tributes to Lee Simmons and Zoe Morgan, whom he called “My Tinkerbell”.

Following a tearful staff meeting, bosses decided to keep the Cardiff store closed for another day.

Police were last night continuing to question 20-year-old hotel worker Andrew Saunders over the deaths. He was arrested 25 minutes after the attack, which happened in the town’s Queen Street shopping centre at 5.50am on Wednesday.

Donations have poured into a JustGiving page in memory of Zoe, 21.

Her family described her as “a beautiful daughter, sister, granddaughter and auntie who had a heart of gold and would do anything for anybody”.

They added: “She was taken away from us tragically, too soon. It has left a massive hole in our lives.”

Witnesses said Lee, 33, died a hero trying to save his girlfriend of four months when she was set upon as they left a nightshift together.

Neighbour Rhydian Bowen Phillips, 39, said: “What’s sad is he found a job here recently and then found a girlfriend and they were both seen to be so very happy.

“They were always holding hands and would travel to work together.”

Pals of Mr Saunders were shocked by his arrest at the £1million farmhouse in Newport, Gwent, that he shares with mum Karen, 55, and sister Anna, 19.

Detectives said he was known to the dead couple.

Last night police said a man had been charged with the couple’s murders. Pictures: PA; WALES NEWS Pictures: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
