Bookies are so certain this month will follow suit that they have slashed odds that October will be the hottest on record from 10-1 to 3-1.

And with sunny spells forecast for most of the UK, Coral have odds of 1-2 that 2016 ends up being the hottest year on record.

Coral’s John Hill said: “Punters are optimistic that this October is going to be a record breaker.”

The average October temperatur­e is 9.49C with the average high being 12.79C, according to the Met Office.

October’s warmest day on record was in 2011, when Gravesend in Kent sweltered at 29.9C.

Exacta Weather’s James Madden said: “This hot spell of weather is set to extend to around at least mid-month.”
