LAID TO REST

- By WILL STONE news@dailystar.co.uk

WORLD leaders paid their respects at the funeral of former Israeli Prime Minister and President Shimon Peres yesterday. He was buried at the National Cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem following his death earlier this week. Prime Minister Theresa May, Foreign ® Secretary Boris Johnson, Prince Charles, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama were among the dignitaries who attended, flanked by heavy security.

Putting aside their differences, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shook hands with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Paying tribute during the service, President Obama said the presence of Mr Abbas was “a reminder of the unfinished business of peace”.

He said Mr Peres, who died at the age of 93, agreed with a Palestinian state alongside Israel but “never saw his dream of peace fulfilled”.

Around 8,000 police officers were deployed and later confirmed they had detained a right-wing activist on suspicion of planning to “carry out an action during the funeral of Shimon Peres”.
