Probe doorstep attack

A MUM who fought off a babysnatcher on her doorstep had to wait five days for police to arrive because officers were “too busy”.

Sarah Hunt grappled with the kidnapper who tried to take eight-month-old daughter Amelia from her. The badly-shaken mum called police after the female stranger fled empty-handed at 10am on Saturday.

But they did not turn up at her home in Leicester until Thursday night due to “operational demand”.

Sarah, 28, a business development manager, said: “They said they would treat the matter as a priority, send a patrol around the area and would come to see me that day.

“Then I got a call saying they would see me Tuesday. Then I got a call on Monday saying they would see me on Friday. I can’t believe they have not been to see me.”

Sarah had answered the door to an Asian woman who grabbed her daughter’s pushchair and said: “I need baby.” As the stranger tried to drag the pram outside frightened Sarah shut the door on her arm. “I was crying and screaming – telling her to go away and leave my baby alone. “It was terrifying. I thought she was going to steal my baby.” Sarah’s fiancé James Demorais, 27, slammed the police response. He said: “Sarah does not feel safe anywhere now.” A Leicestershire Police spokesman said they were told no-one was hurt. “Due to operational demand and the allocation of resources to priority incidents we were unable to attend on the day, so arranged an appointment to go and see her,” the spokesman said. “Unfortunately this appointment had to be rescheduled due to operational commitments.”
