MOYES’ STOP START

Stability key to survival says boss

- By IAN MURTAGH

DAVID MOYES has pledged to make Sunderland stable by stopping the revolving door.

Twelve months ago, Dick Advocaat quit after six months in charge, convinced the Black Cats squad was not fit for purpose.

One year down the line, Sam Allardyce has been and gone and it’s now Moyes in the hottest of hot seats having previously turned down the job when Advocaat (below) resigned.

They host West Brom today in exactly the same position now as back then, anchored to the foot of the table, without a league win this season.

That has led to talk of Moyes being the latest shortterm appointment but that’s not the way he sees it.

“I want to halt the revolving doors,” he said.

“If they keep the revolving door going, somewhere, someone is going to have to stay ‘stop’ because it needs to be put right and over a longer period than it is at the moment.

“There must be a period of stability somewhere down the line.”

Moyes’ reluctance to take the job last year was understandable but if anything Sunderland are in a worse state now with such a wafer-thin squad at his disposal.

He added: “There’s a big job to be done but I don’t think it’s impossible. I believe ® it can be fixed, I really do. When I came in, I wanted an exciting challenge and that hasn’t changed although it’s more difficult than I thought. “There are an awful lot of things that need fixing and I’ve not been here long enough to take a view on what has been right and wrong but I can see things which could do with being changed.

“The main thing the supporters notice is what happens on the pitch and I want to get that right as soon as possible.” Moyes, who has been criticised by fans for being too downbeat, admits that’s easier said than done.

“The last period of stability here was under Peter Reid and that’s a long time ago,” he said.

“You knew what you were getting from that team.

“Now you don’t know from one week to the next. I’m the manager and I don’t know what I’m getting!”
