Berahino big deal for Pulis

- By TIM NASH

SAIDO BERAHINO could be set for a bumper new deal at West Brom.

The striker, 23, is out of contract next summer and his future looked up in the air after a £20m move to Stoke collapsed in the close season.

The former England Under-21 star has been involved in a string of controversial incidents but it is understood the club’s new Chinese owners want to hand the Burundi-born hitman a fresh start.

Team-mate Claudio Yacob was rewarded with a new two-year contract on Thursday and long-serving Chris Brunt looks set to follow.

Berahino has been at the club since he was 11 and Baggies boss Tony Pulis said: “It wouldn’t surprise me if the club have spoken to him.

“I’m sure Saido will come and see me at some stage.

“I think it would be brilliant for Saido. I’d be as pleased as punch if they get it done. Personally I’d love him to stay.

“I’d love him to sign another contract and get himself fit and up and running again.

“He’s had four or five transfer windows of uncertainty and that has affected him.

“For him to settle down and sign a new contract would be brilliant for everyone concerned with this club and personally for him as well.

“That’s as important as anything else.”

Berahino is back in contention for today’s trip to Sunderland after a stomach bug kept him out of last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Stoke.

Pulis added: “He’s trained well this week and he’ll be with us this weekend.

“We need to get him as fit as we can and get him back in the group because when he’s playing and he’s fit, he’s a top, top player.”
