BOXING fans have showered the family of tragic fighter Mike Towell with money.

The Scottish boxer died aged 25 after he was taken from the ring on a stretcher following a bout lasting five rounds.

A fundraising page launched by former fighter Ricky Hatton has raised more than £32,000 – way above the £20,000 target.

Mike was diagnosed with severe bleeding and swelling to his brain after the fight in Glasgow. He died in hospital. His partner Chloe Ross, of Dundee, mum to their two-year-old son Rocco, said: “My baby has lost his daddy.”

She added: “I’m absolutely heartbroken to say my annoying best friend passed away.”

Kind fundraisers said: “A young boy and partner are ® left behind. Let’s make sure they are looked after.” It has been claimed Mike cut short a training session after suffering a headache in the weeks before the fatal fight. Gym owner and promoter Alex Morrison said it had forced him to stop sparring as he prepared for his bout with Dale Evans. He said: “He was sparring with a guy called Stewart Burt but he stopped because of the headache. “When he told the guys he wasn’t feeling too good, they advised him not to box.” A spokesman for St Andrew’s Sporting Club, where the fight took place, said nobody in Towell’s management team was aware of headache problems leading up to the fight.
