WOMEN fancy men with beards much more than they do their cleanshaven counterparts.
Blokes with facial hair are seen as more powerful, macho and virile than fresh-faced lads, scientists found.
They say women subconsciously think men with beards, like Fifty Shades Of Grey actor Jamie Dornan, 34, are in control and a better match for mating.
The team of researchers revealed: “Beards may enhance perceived masculinity, particularly the size of the lower face and jaw. “Attractiveness ratings were highest for bearded faces with larger jaws.” But psychology expert Barnaby Dixon of Queensland University in Australia warned that macho men with a full set of whiskers need to be careful they do not push the look too far.
He recommends “an intermediate level of beardedness” rather than a bushy beard.
Barnaby, who worked with scientists at Scottish universities St Andrews and Glasgow, also said: “Full-bearded men may be perceived as better fathers who could protect and invest in offspring.”
But despite the experts’ findings, some women have started a backlash against bushy hipsterstyle whiskers.
Blogger Nicki Daniels said: “The beard has turned into the padded bra of masculinity.”
She claimed that despite the super-macho trend “most of you can’t change a tyre”.
