Jacko’s quick on the uptake

JACKSON IRVINE says Burton have proved they are the Championship’s fast learners.

The Brewers were tipped by many to go straight back down after coming up from League One in May.

But they moved five points clear of the drop zone by beating Cardiff, thanks to the Australian’s fifth of the season and a Lucas Akins header.

Irvine, signed from Ross County for £300,000 in the summer, reckons Nigel Clough’s side can do more than just consolidate.

“A lot of us are learning our trade at this level and a lot of the boys have got bags of experience, so we have got that blend,” the midfielder said.

“We’ve also got a manager who has got complete faith in us and every confidence we can achieve what we want to achieve in this league.”

Irvine, 23, is Burton’s top scorer following his latest effort.

“I don’t know where they are coming from to be honest,” he said. “But the goals come from the work rate of the front two.”

The defeat was Cardiff’s sixth in seven league games and raised the heat on manager Paul Trollope, with some fans chanting for him to be sacked.

He said: “I can understand the frustration.

“I’m frustrated myself because it’s not where we should be and it’s not where we want to be.

“They pay their money and sing what they sing, but we’re working hard and the international break affords us some time to improve.”
