JAMIE PEACOCK offered to quit after Hull KR’s nightmare relegation from Super League.

As the club’s head of rugby he said he felt accountable for the defeat to Salford in Saturday’s Million Pound game.

But chairman Neil Hudgell refused to accept his resignation and last night Peacock vowed to rebuild Rovers. He said: “My resignation was turned down. I can continue my journey with this great club.”

With just two minutes left Rovers led Salford by eight points.

But the Red Devils staged an amazing comeback by scoring two late tries to force golden point extra time.

Crying

A minute later full-back Gareth O’Brien slotted over a 45-metre drop goal to save Salford and doom Rovers.

All Rovers’ playing contracts have been ripped up and the club’s central funding will be slashed by about £1m.

But former England and Leeds hero Peacock said it was the devastating scenes in the changing rooms after the defeat that contributed to his resignation offer.

He said: “To be in a dressing room with grown men, wives and children crying is not what sport is about – it will stay with me for life.

“I gave everything I could to the club and came up short. I want to be accountable for my actions in life and offered my resignation.”

Peacock, 38, retired as a player after winning the treble with Leeds last season, taking over the business role at Rovers.

He came out of retirement to play the last four games, because of an injury crisis.
