LEON BRITTON is no stranger to a relegation scrap.

The pint-sized midfielder was in the Swansea team that came within a whisker of being relegated from the Football League altogether in 2003.

Thirteen years on and the club is facing another desperate struggle – but this time the Swans are trying to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Safety

Britton is still in the midfield and desperate to help guide the Welsh club to safety.

A point against Watford was not enough to drag Bob Bradley’s side out of the bottom three – but it was a start.

“The last 10 years have been great in terms of the progression this club has made,” said Britton.

“But there were times, when I first came to Swansea, when we had to battle just to stay in the Football League.

“I have been part of that so I know what it’s like to have to work hard and battle.”

Swansea fired blanks all afternoon and despite dominating possession they couldn’t find a way past Hornets keeper Heurelho Gomes.

Gylfi Sigurdsson hit a post and fluffed a chance from eight yards, while Mike van der Hoorn missed from even closer.

Britton added: “At the moment, it’s just small margins but if we carry on performing that way, results will come.

“We are certainly in a different situation than we are used to. It’s a different kind of pressure but as players you have to get on with it and stand up and be counted.”

Watford are currently ninth, having lost only once in their last six league games. And they were unlucky not to be awarded at least one penalty in the second half, when Kyle Naughton tripped Valon Behrami as the Swiss star was about to shoot.

Ideas

Boss Walter Mazzarri was less than impressed with referee Paul Tierney and made his feelings known from the technical area.

Defender Sebastian Prodl said: “We are still learning the ideas of the coach but what he wants us to do could take us on to another level.

“I believe that if we keep on working like this we can achieve what he wants.

“We are not quite playing how he wants at the moment.

“But we are getting there and we are getting better.”
