‘Let lags run jails’

DISGRACED politician Jonathan Aitken believes lags should be employed as prison officers to save cash.

The 74-year-old, jailed for perjury in 1999, reckons “trusted” inmates could supervise other prisoners.

He said: “The suicide rates going skywards are partly happening because prison officers don’t have time to go around looking into the cells.”

Justice Secretary Liz Truss has announced plans to boost recruitment of prison staff, with thousands of officers receiving a pay rise.
