Bringing in Kightly’s a good Caul

- By NICK LUCY

MICHAEL KIGHTLY has been hailed as Burton’s Championship saviour by fellow loan signing Cauley Woodrow.

Kightly opted for a loan move from Premier League Burnley last month, while Woodrow signed up for a short-term switch from Craven Cottage to the Brewers.

The duo teamed up to halt Norwich’s charge towards the play-off spots and earn Burton another priceless win in the battle for survival.

Woodrow fired Nigel Clough’s side into the lead before setting up Kightly to hit the winner from 25 yards to ensure he had a much happier day than his Burnley team-mates in the FA Cup.

Woodrow said: “Michael has played at a high level for England Under-21s and in the Premier League for quite a few years. He’s a very clever footballer.

“If he can use his head and experience to help the lads who are less experienced, it is only going to put us in a good position when we play.

“For me, as a young player, I am learning off him. He tries to help out on the pitch by talking to us and he also helps us in the dressing room.”

All three of Clough’s January loan signings – Woodrow, Kightly and Denmark Under-21 star Lasse Vigen Christensen – have set aside personal goals to focus on Burton’s mission to remain in the Championship for another season.

Woodrow added: “All the lads who have come in, we are so passionate about this football club staying in the Championship.

“We don’t just care about ourselves, we want to help Burton. It would be another massive thing because the club have done great things to get here.”

Steven Whittaker insisted that Norwich could still make the play-offs, despite this defeat leaving them seven points adrift of the top six.

The Canaries looked like extending their unbeaten run to seven matches when Whittaker’s wayward attempt at goal cannoned off Cameron Jerome for his 11th goal of the season.

But those hopes were short-lived as Burton came out on top.

Whittaker said: “We still believe that we’ve got the squad to go on great runs.

“We know we need to pick up points and pick them up quickly.

“We’ve not been consistent enough in these types of games. You know you’re going to come away in the Championship and it’s going to be tough, it’s going to be scrappy at times.”
