You’re risking your life

BOXING HAYE DEADLY SERIOUS HE’LL BEAT BELLEW

- By CHRIS McKENNA

DAVID HAYE has told Tony Bellew that he is risking his life by getting in the ring with him on Saturday night.

The pair will meet at the O2 Arena in London and Haye issued his deadly threat last night at a heated press conference in Liverpool.

Haye, 36, is risking the wrath of the British Boxing Board of Control by claiming Bellew could die during their heavyweight clash.

The Londoner said: “He’s risking his life. This isn’t about his career – his life is on the line.

“People say I shouldn’t say this or it’s harsh but it’s the truth.

“I’m in the ring with him with 10oz gloves on for 36 minutes, I’m allowed to punch him in his head.

“If you think he will be OK after this fight then I’m sure you can get good odds on that.”

BBBC chief Robert Smith said yesterday that Haye will be hauled in for a hearing to discuss his comments last weekend in which he claimed he would leave his opponent in hospital and “cave in his skull”. Haye already had a ® suspended sentence on his licence after punching Bellew at the announcement press conference in November.

The ex-world heavyweight champ said: “People get offended. If I go rock climbing with no harness, I might fall and die. If I say that am I wrong? That is a fact. There is a chance of that happening. “Boxing people don’t like to talk about the small chances, even though it happens all the time. “I’m not saying I want to do that to him, I’m saying if I hit him continuously in his head, he says he will keep getting up. What will happen to him and his head?” The pair went face-to-face at the Hilton in Liverpool in front of around 500 of Bellew’s fans. Promoter Eddie Hearn scrapped plans for a steel fence to keep them apart, but two security guards did that as they traded insults for four minutes during the traditional face-off. Haye had earlier lost his cool by calling the crowd “retards” and gave them a rude onefingered gesture. Current WBC cruiserweight champion Bellew said: “He’s an absolute scumbag of a man. A scumbag of the highest order. “He lost the plot. His language was disgusting, there were children in the audience.” O
