ICE ‘N EASY FOR BEST

- by PATRICK WEAVER

EVERYONE is praying jockey George Baker makes a quick return to the track.

The former all-weather champ took a horrible fall at St Moritz on Sunday and will remain in hospital for a while to come.

Two days earlier, though, John Best was celebrating a second win there with Berrahri.

The six-year-old is owned by a group of Best’s friends that includes leading football agent, Mark Curtis.

All of them are hooked on the unique party atmosphere at the Swiss ski resort. So much so that Berrahri has run there three winters in a row. His form figures on ice read 212/33-541 and he could go back next year.

Kieren Fox rides most of Best’s runners but missed out on Berrahri’s victory as he was at Lingfield.

He had a double there on Ourmullion for Best and Take The Helm for Brian Meehan.

Raphael Lingg came in for the winning ride at St Moritz.

“It was nice to have wins both sides of the Channel, 750 miles apart,” said Best. “Ourmullion continued his run of good form. Kieren tracked the leaders and made progress a furlong out to get Ourmullion’s head in front in the final 200 yards.

“We’re already counting down to next year’s White Turf meeting. Regarding the care George got, the paramedics were brilliant in their response and subsequent actions.

“George got the best care probably anywhere in the world.

“All at White Turf made it as simple as possible for George’s wife Nicola to be at his side as quickly and easily as practical. Hopefully he will make a speedy recovery and be back soon.”
