VAN’S NOT MOVING
MANCHESTER CITY and Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk will not be leaving Southampton this summer, chairman Ralph Krueger has insisted.
The £40m-rated Dutch defender, 25, who sat out of Sunday’s EFL Cup final 3-2 defeat to Manchester United with an ankle injury, is wanted by a host of Europe’s top clubs.
But Krueger said: “We are just out of the January transfer window and are striving to keep this group together and to build on it.
“Virgil is very committed to being with us for a long time and we don’t see anything changing.”
Krueger also ruled out a repeat of the Saints’ annual summer fire-sale which has seen stars including Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana and Victor Wanyama depart in recent years.
He added: “We don’t want to do what we did in the last three summers.
“We would like to move away from that.
Trial
“We feel confident this summer will be a lot quieter in Southampton.”
Meanwhile, Dusan Tadic, 28, has astonishingly come out against video technology, despite Southampton being denied a clear goal at Wembley.
Manolo Gabbiadini’s 12th-minute strike with the score goalless was rubbed out when linesman Stuart Burt incorrectly ruled he was offside.
But Saints midfielder Tadic has gone against his boss Claude Puel and team-mate Oriel Romeu, who both called for video replays to be introduced to cut out the cock-ups.
The Serb ace said: “No, because with this you will lose a little bit of the flow of the game. Mistakes are normal. It’s not good when it happens to you.”
Ironically, the International FA Board is meeting on Friday at Wembley and may press ahead with a trial of video replays next season, possibly in the FA Cup.
