EX-premier League ace Fernando Torres has talked about his near-death scare on the pitch.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea star almost swallowed his tongue when his head hit the turf with a sickening impact.

The Spanish striker appeared to be shaking violently after challenging for a header and landing awkwardly on the pitch.

Quick-thinking Atletico Madrid team-mates rushed to his aid, putting their hands in his mouth to stop him from swallowing his tongue.

Tears

They and their Deportivo La Coruna opposition were seen in tears later. Doctors treated Torres on the pitch before carrying him on a stretcher to an ambulance.

The 32-year-old spent the night in hospital in a “stable” condition.

But he emerged smiling yesterday and told his fans on Twitter: “Thank you all for caring for me. It was only a scare. I remember nothing.”

The two team-mates who saved him, Gabi and Sime Vrsaljko, were praised by the Deportivo club doctor for their “perfect” response.

Torres, who was one of the Premier League’s top strikers and is a World Cup winner with Spain, will be ready to play again after 48 hours’ rest.

Following the game, his manager Diego Simeone – the Argentinian famous for getting David Beckham sent off during the 1998 World Cup – admitted: “We are very nervous after the scare.”
