Ben in bit of a blunder
BEN Murdoch-Masila’s last-gasp howler stopped the Red Devils climbing into the top four.
The Kiwi forward, who had grabbed a comeback try in his first match of the season, looked sure to score when he took a Robert Lui pass but lost the ball over the line.
Reece Lyne celebrated his new two-year contract with two tries for the Wildcats, who trailed 22-12 just 10 minutes from time.
Then Bill Tupou strolled through a gap before Lyne notched his second try and Sam Williams slotted over the match-winning points before the late drama.
But Lyne was carried off on a stretcher with a knee injury after his tackle on Murdoch-Masila which saved the day.
Blip
Red Devils boss Ian Watson said: “It will be a little blip for Ben but he had a great game apart from that and will come back strongly.
“We were responsible for our own downfall and it’s a lesson we have to learn.”
Wildcats boss Chris Chester revealed he suffered an arm injury saluting the victory.
“We got out of jail. I thought we’d won it and thrown it away but showed plenty of character,” he said.
“Salford were very good and a bit unfortunate not to go away with something.”
Salford had Lama Tasi and Logan Tomkins sinbinned in the first half and trailed 12-2 at the break before running in four tries in 12 minutes to lead 22-12, with Lui and Gareth O’Brien calling the shots.
Jacob Miller also crossed for Wakefield with Salford’s other tries from Kris Welham, Greg Johnson and George Griffin. WAKEFIELD will seek a new home after giving notice to quit their Beaumont Legal Stadium at the end of the year.
Chairman Michael Carter said: “We cannot meet Super League’s Minimum Grounds Standard and we have no choice but to look for pastures new.”
