A MOTHER-of-three died after being crushed against a wall by a suspected drink-driver as she pushed a pram.

The 37-year-old was with her partner when a car careered off the road and ploughed through the family before crashing into a café.

Police are now probing whether the woman behind the wheel of the black Volkswagen Beetle had been drinking.

Paramedics fought to save the mum who was pinned to a wall after the lunchtime crash in Battle, East Sussex, on Sunday.

She was taken to hospital in a critical condition but later died.

Her 50-year-old partner was also seriously hurt, and remains in Royal Sussex County Hospital with head injuries.

Emergency services also worked to free customers trapped inside The Lounge café.

The three children and driver of the Beetle escaped the smash with just shock and minor injuries and were treated at Conquest Hospital in St Leonards-on-Sea.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward. Sergeant Peter Verney said: “Our thoughts are very much with the family at what is a very difficult time, and we would ask people to respect their privacy while they try to come to terms with what has happened.”

Witness Paul Noble said: “We saw the aftermath. The man was in the road and the woman was between the car and The Lounge.

“It was awful. I spoke to my friend, he saw it. He said the father and one of the children both went up in the air.”

Sussex Police said it was investigating reports the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol.
