VARDY DEATH THREATS

- by DAVE ARMITAGE

JAMIE VARDY has revealed he received death threats after Leicester axed Claudio Ranieri.

The England star also revealed his wife Rebekah had to deal with terrifying attempts to cut her up on the road while driving with her children in the days following Ranieri’s controversial exit from the Foxes.

Vardy says he felt like Public Enemy No.1 with many blaming him for the sacking of Leicester’s title-winning boss, amid claims that Ranieri had been stabbed in the back.

The 30-year-old striker said: “You’re getting death threats about your family, kids, everything. On social media, you name it – walking down the street.

“To be honest I get them every week. Football fans don’t seem to like me. I just get on with it but when people are trying to cut your

missus up while she’s driving along with the kids in the back of the car, it’s not the best. It’s happened plenty of times. It is terrifying.’’

Asked about getting the police involved, he added: “All that can happen is they get banned on Twitter. People get cut up but if there’s no cameras, you’re screwed.”

Vardy said Leicester’s players had been genuinely shocked by the fallout from the Ranieri sacking.

“The stories were quite hurtful, a lot of false accusations were being thrown out there and there’s nothing us, as players, could do about it,” he said.

“Apparently the meeting that got him sacked ... absolute shambles.

“I read one story that said it was straight after the Sevilla game. It said I was personally involved in a meeting when I was actually sat in anti-doping for three hours.”

Vardy explained the ominous silence in the first 24 hours after last month’s shock news.

“My tweet was going out straightaway but I wrote it that many times I couldn’t quite get the wording right. You don’t know what to say.

“It was 24 hours before I did it but we had just got back from Seville.

“We were delayed, landed, then went straight back home, kids in the bath and straight to bed myself.

“It’s hard. What he did for Leicester was unbelievable and nobody would have expected that in a million years.

“We can only thank him for that.”
