Blades are Shea joy to watch

EVERY KICK, EVERY GOAL, EVERY GAME JAY’S HAPPY DAYS

-

JAY O’SHEA is so happy to be at Sheffield United, he even enjoys watching games from the stands.

But the Irish midfielder hopes to show boss Chris Wilder he is worth a permanent contract at Bramall Lane next season.

The 28-year-old was making just his third start since joining on loan from Chesterfield in January.

He marked it with a superb volley to earn the League One leaders a draw to maintain a 10-point gap on the play-off places.

Aim

Wilder has banned all talk of new contracts until the summer but O’Shea says he is desperate to stay.

“Of course I want to stay, but at the moment promotion is the most important thing,” he said.

“It’s not just about me. The main aim is to get Sheffield United back to where they belong.

“I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve had to be patient and when my chance came along, I’ve tried to take it. It’s difficult but I knew when I was coming to a side that was doing well and top of the league that it was always going to be tough for me.

“I’m not silly enough to think I’d walk straight into the team but even in the games I’ve not been playing, it’s been a pleasure to sit in the stands and watch the lads.”

Wilder is on the brink of leading his team back into the Championship after a six-year absence.

O’Shea added: “I didn’t realise until I actually signed how massive a club this is. It’s unbelievable.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute here and I just want to help them back where they belong.” It was O’Shea’s 50th-minute goal that cancelled out a well-worked first-half opener from Oldham striker Tope Obadeyi.

Oldham boss John Sheridan said: “I thought it was a terrific performance against a team that’s already promoted in my eyes.

“If you didn’t know where we both were in the league table it would have been hard to know who was top and who was bottom.

“We’ve now lost one in 10 which isn’t a bad record.

“But we’ve got to be wary of what might be and get a few more points to be safe.”
