EDEN’S ICING ON THE CAKE

Greg’s tries win birthday bet

- Yp ALC@< JKFKK

GREG EDEN got the sweet taste of success with a double dose of table topping.

The winger’s two tries helped Castleford romp back to the top of Super League on points difference.

His double also took him to the summit of the try-scoring charts – and that’s bad news for team-mate Greg Minikin.

Eden now sits on 10 from six games, one ahead of Minikin who missed this game with a shoulder injury.

The red-hot duo had a bet with each other that whoever scored fewest tries by the time of Minikin’s birthday this week had to bake his birthday cake.

But despite winning the bet, Eden still copped some stick from coach Daryl Powell for selfishly going for the glory of a third try. Eden was tackled but still managed to get the ball away for Michael Shenton to score. But Powell said: “He might get some cake on his face this week.

Ruthless

“Fortunately for him, he had someone to help him out.”

Catalans, who haven’t won in four games, raced into a 14-0 lead after just 12 minutes.

The Tigers didn’t know what had hit them as Iain Thornley and Richie Myler touched down with Luke Walsh kicking three goals.

They weathered the storm and it wasn’t long before they clicked into ruthless attack mode.

Tries from Zak Hardaker and Grant Millington were followed by touchdowns by Joel Monaghan and Eden.

Catalans started the second half strongly and got their reward with a Louis Anderson try that cut the gap to two points.

But Cas again turned up the heat with a Junior Moors try and then that classy effort from Shenton.

Eden did superbly for his second score, brushing aside two players, before Catalans grabbed a late Vincent Duport consolation try.

Coach Laurent Frayssinous said: “We made a great start but our defence for 80 minutes was not good enough.”
