A BOY munching on a donut was left in agony when a huge seagull swooped on him and gorged on his finger.

Thomas West, seven, was on a family day out when he was attacked in the street.

Four more birds with 3ft wingspans then joined in the ferocious assault. The boy was left covered in blood after the shock attack in Plymouth, Devon.

Dad Gary, who beat away the beasts, said: “He had blood all over his hand and his donut was on the floor. It was terrifying.”

Thomas was rushed to a treatment centre for emergency care. The RSPB website says making bins “gull-proof ’ is the best way to prevent assaults.

One seagull in St Ives, Cornwall, known as W195, is said to be a ringleader of a flock which rips pastries from people’s hands.

Next month specialist seagull squads will be climbing onto rooftops and remove nests or eggs they find.

It follows a debate in Parliament which heard seagulls should be given contraceptives to

halt breeding.
