COIN dealers are cashing in on the new £1 by flogging rare editions for up to £300.

Sellers on eBay are out to make a mint as collectors rush to buy test versions of the 12-sided coin.

Some marked with a 2016 stamp had attracted bids of £310 on the auction website last night.

They are identical to those issued yesterday when the coin entered circulation but more collectable as they have not been through the banking system.

One seller was hoping to agree a oneoff price of £499.99 for a haul of 50.

The advert said: “These 50 brilliant uncirculated 12-sided £1 coins will be posted within 15 minutes of order. Be one of the first to get your hands on some of the first to be made by Royal Mint.”

Around 300million new coins have gone into circulation with 1.5billion planned by the end of next year.

The new £1 coin has been dubbed “the most secure in the world” and boasts hi-tech features such as a hologram.

Shops will stop accepting the old “round pound” on October 15.

Meanwhile Tesco trolleys across many of its stores will be unlocked as the supermarket giant performs upgrades so that they can accept the new coin.
