BREXIT KICKS OFF TODAY

- ® by ROSS KANIUK

THE Scottish Parliament has voted to demand a new independence referendum in defiance of Theresa May.

MSPs voted 69 to 59 in favour of going to the polls between autumn 2018 and spring 2019. But the UK Government’s Scotland Secretary David Mundell insisted PM Mrs May’s position has not changed and negotiations on a referendum would not start until after Brexit was finished. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon could now try to assert the power of her Scottish Parliament by staging an expensive “advisory” vote.
