Hull of a choice for mum

BROTHERS DO BATTLE

- by JULIE STOTT ®

GEORGE GRIFFIN will put his mum’s love to the test when Salford take on Hull this Friday.

But Red Devils forward Griffin fears he might miss out to older brother and Hull star Josh.

Griffin, 24, joked: “I reckon she might be supporting him – because he’s a mummy’s boy!

“She says she wants us both to play well and wants a draw, but I reckon it’s Josh really she wants to win.”

Josh, 26, has helped Hull to third in the table, with their only defeat coming against Catalans in February.

But George is also flying with in-form Salford and he’s already got bragging rights over his brother this year.

Proud

He said: “We got one over on them in the friendly in pre-season and I scored so he is after me.

“It’s going to be tough but we’ve got to go there with a good mentality and give it to them because they are in good form.”

Salford are turning on the style, winning their last three games to move up to fourth, just a point behind Hull.

But Griffin believes it’s the Red Devils’ determined defence and never-say-die attitude that will take them far this season.

He added: “We averaged four or fives tries against us a game last year and at the moment it is two, so our defence has improved.

“But we are really proud of what we are doing and to be here in the table is no surprise to us.

“We think we should be in that top four and now it is up to us to hold that place.

“We are not a team of superstars, we are a team that work hard and dig deep for each other.”

Salford only saved their Super League lives with a dramatic golden point drop goal in last year’s Million Pound Game.

It’s a close call that still haunts the players and forward Josh Jones insists they never want to go through that nightmare again.

Jones said: “We want to get as far away from the Million Pound Game as we can. It is a great motivation.

“A few of us have come from big clubs and we know that defence wins you titles. That is something we have driven into the other boys.”
