Our pick of the horses to follow for Saturday’s Grand National

THE days of 100-1 shots winning the Randox Health Grand National may be over but the last five winners have all been longer than 20-1.

There is still value to found among the 40 runners taking part in this year’s race.

Better quality horses are now winning the dramatic race and horses with valuable experience over the demanding fences still play a significan­t part.

Here are eight that are among the likeliest to make it to the hallowed winner’s enclosure.

16 of his 30 races and was not beaten far by Vieux Lion Rouge when he had his second race over the National fences in December. It is over five years since he last fell and he is trained by Gordon Elliott who won the 2007 Grand National with Silver Birch.

AN eight-year-old that reaped the benefit of his seventh in last year’s National when winning on his return to Aintree in December. He has since won the valuable Grand National trial at Haydock in February, illustrati­ng he has more stamina than most in Saturday’s line-up. His run last year, when a 66-1 shot, should not be held against him as he ran better than his odds suggested. This time he is among the market leaders and for good reason. His trainer David Pipe knows what is required as he won the race with Comply Or Die in 2008.
