High time Jose stopped losing his cool with Luke

-

THE 1967 film Cool Hand Luke stars Paul Newman as a rebellious convict who is constantly picked on by a prison warden in order to keep all the other inmates down. Fast forward to now and there’s another Luke having a rough time of it, this time at Manchester United. Boss Jose Mourinho has been merciless in the past week in digging out his England left-back Luke Shaw.

First he said at the weekend that Shaw (left) was “a long way behind” his team-mates in commitment and focus.

And even after the 21-year-old came off the bench on Tuesday to earn United’s last-gasp penalty – when a shot with his weaker right foot was handled by Everton’s Ashley Williams – Mourinho was still at it.

He claimed he had “made every decision” for Shaw from the touchline. Maybe Mourinho ought to be credited with an ‘assist’ for earning that spot-kick converted by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Just like in the Newman film you find yourself wondering how much this particular Luke can take. You have to feel sorry for Shaw, who was also picked on by Mourinho’s predecessor Louis van Gaal.

After all, he suffered a horrific leg break in 2015 and has had no less than 15 injury setbacks in less than three years at United.

It’s time Mourinho gave Shaw, who merits a start at Sunderland on Sunday, another sort of break and started showing him some love.
