DOOMED TO FAILURE

Writing on the wall says Reid

- by IAN MURTAGH

PETER REID fears Sunderland are on a downward spiral with little prospect of a revival on the horizon.

And although the former Black Cats boss does not blame current chief David Moyes for the club’s imminent relegation, he believes the Scot has been too downbeat since arriving last summer. Reid led Sunderland to successive seventh-place finishes during his seven years in charge and the club have never come close to matching his achievements in the 14 years since he left. He does not hold out much hope of an upturn in fortune in the near future. “I can’t see a way out,” he said. “I think they are down now. I was at the Burnley game and had a word with David afterwards. “I wouldn’t say he was resigned to it but there was an air of inevitability around the Stadium of Light.

Slippery

“They’ve changed that many managers over the years and got out of it but I can’t see a way out now. “The owner is trying to sell and there are no buyers. If they go down, it’s hard to get out of that league. It’s very difficult and it’s a slippery slope. “The whole club’s flat and they are going down with a whimper. “It’s flat on the terraces, it’s flat on the pitch and a club that is close to my heart are going down. They aren’t good enough.” Reid has sympathy for Moyes, who was not given the transfer funds predecessor Sam Allardyce enjoyed, but feels he has not always helped himself. He added: “Sam managed to get some good players in who kept them up. David was told no money was available. “I’ve got the highest regard for David but early in the season, after a game, he said, ‘We are in a relegation fight’.”
